Tropical Storm Debby severely damaged Springfield Middle School in Wilson County, North Carolina, early Thursday, as the storm swept through the region, leaving devastation in its wake.

A powerful tornado, one of at least three reported overnight, struck around 3 a.m., causing extensive damage to the school. Sections of the walls and roof of the 6th and 7th-grade halls were either destroyed or heavily compromised.

Superintendent Lane Mills of Wilson County Schools expressed deep concern over the situation, stating, “It was heartbreaking to see the school right after the event.”

In addition to the school, the tornado damaged several homes and a church. The storm continued to pose a threat throughout the day, with forecasters warning of the potential for more tornadoes as Tropical Storm Debby moved across North Carolina.

The storm, which made its second landfall overnight, is expected to continue up the East Coast.
