The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. near a Chipotle on Hillsborough Street. Police responded to reports of a man waving a gun and arrested Olson on Dan Allen Drive.
Witnesses described Olson, who was wearing khaki shorts and a purple shirt, as “suspicious.” According to police radio traffic, he threatened a student, claiming he would “teach them a lesson,” before walking towards nearby fraternity houses.
Olson, who previously worked at the Wake County District Attorney’s Office, is no longer employed there, according to District Attorney Lorrin Freeman. The university confirmed that Olson is not affiliated with NC State as a student or employee. He was released on a $3,000 bond.
