Derrick Rose has announced his retirement after a 16-year NBA career.

A Chicago native, Rose was the No. 1 overall pick by the Chicago Bulls in the 2008 draft. He spent 8 years there and was the Rookie Of The Year in 2008-09. He became the league’s youngest MVP at 22 in the 2010-11 season.

As a young superstar, Rose was almost unstoppable as an offensive talent. His play on the court was smooth and powerful, with a handle that floated by defenders and an innate ability to finish above the rim.

But Rose’s career will often be associated with what it could’ve been after he tore an ACL in 2012. Over the next two years, he would play in just 10 games. He became a journeyman until his mutually agreed release from the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this week.

In 16 years Rose played for the Bulls, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and Memphis Grizzlies. He has career averages of 17.4 points and 5.2 assists per game. He made the playoffs eight times, including a 2011 run to the Eastern Conference Finals.
