Durham Police Warn of Rise in Package Thefts Containing Cellphones

Durham police are alerting the community about a rise in package thefts, with thieves now focusing on cellphone deliveries.
Recent surveillance footage shows a suspect posing as an Amazon delivery driver, stealing a package from a resident’s porch. The Durham Police Department issued a warning on Monday, highlighting the increasing number of similar thefts costing victims hundreds of dollars.
“I saw reports on Nextdoor about this happening, but I didn’t realize how common it was,” said Durham resident Vanessa Burrowes.
To help prevent package thefts, especially if you’re expecting a cellphone delivery, Durham police recommend the following:
- Track your package: Use tracking services to keep an eye on delivery progress.
- Require a signature: Request a signature for the delivery.
- Pick up in person: Have your phone delivered to a store and pick it up yourself.
- Use a video doorbell: Video doorbells can help deter theft.
- Porch lockbox: Secure packages with a lockbox on your porch.
- Mailbox sensor: A sensor can alert you when a package arrives.
- Make it obvious you’re recording: Visible cameras can discourage theft.
- File a claim: If your package is stolen, file a claim with the shipping company for a possible refund.
- Store your phone safely: Keep your phone secure in a zipped pocket or bag.
Police continue to investigate the recent crimes, but confirmed that this latest series of thefts is unrelated to a similar incident in May involving a fake Amazon driver.
