Dwyane Wade’s time as a member of the Miami Heat was certainly historic. The statue outside of Kaseya Center commemorating him? Not so much.
An eight-foot, bronze sculpture of one of Wade’s most iconic moments has gone viral as basketball fans across social media are wondering why it looks nothing like the Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer.
Wade is No. 1 in Heat history for points, assists and games played. He won three championships while with the Heat, and the franchise retired his jersey in 2020.
And now he’s the first player in Miami Heat history to have a statue dedicated to a former player outside of the arena.
At least, in theory.
“Who’s that guy?”, Wade said moments after the new statue was unveiled on Sunday (October 27).
It didn’t take long for X (formerly Twitter) users to chime in as well. “They really gave Dwayne Wade a statue of Antoine Walker,” one user commented.
“Dwayne Wade statue look like the monster from I am Legend,” said another.
For what it’s worth, Wade did appear to be extremely humble and appreciative of the gesture from the Heat. Wade sat with his family during the statue’s unveiling.
