NBC News projects that Republicans will keep control of the House of Representatives.

The projection comes a week after President-elect Donald Trump claimed victory against Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election.

The GOP also gained majority control of the Senate.

Heading into the election, House Republicans aimed to expand their majority of 220 seats, compared to the 212 held by Democrats.

All 435 House seats were up for re-election leaving the chamber’s balance of power up for grabs. House members are elected to two-year terms.

That threadbare GOP majority gave Democrats high hopes of flipping the chamber. However, they needed to gain a net of just four seats to seize back control because the vacancies left the chamber with fewer than 435 total votes.

Democrats failed to gain the 218 seats needed for control of the House despite massive fundraising.

Republicans have now solidified total control of Congress and the White House, which will create a smoother path for the GOP to lay down its platform.
