There’s a new vibe in the dating scene, and Black Gen Z women are leading the change. According to a survey by BLK, the dating app for the culture, 64% of Black Gen Z women say they’re practicing celibacy—and most of them made the decision in just the past six months.
But it’s not just women. Across the board, 43% of Black Gen Z daters are hitting pause on sex to focus on themselves. It’s more than a trend—it’s a whole mindset shift. While celebs like 50 Cent, Mya, and Omarion have put celibacy in the spotlight, this wave is deeper than celebrity influence.

People are choosing celibacy for all kinds of reasons. Some are frustrated with the dating game and just want a break, while others are using the time to level up personally. The survey shows 61% of Black Gen Z daters went celibate to focus on self-growth, and 66% said it’s been a game-changer for their emotional well-being.

And regrets? Almost none. A solid 87% said celibacy has either improved their dating life or made no difference—but definitely no downsides.
“This isn’t just a trend; it’s a power move,” says Jonathan Kirkland, Head of Brand and Marketing at BLK. “Black Gen Z is about realness and rewriting the script. They’re prioritizing themselves, their peace, and healthier connections. That’s what’s up.”
Monica Cwynar, a licensed clinical social worker, adds that this shift might also tie back to cultural influences and how Black communities historically view sexuality and gender roles.
At the end of the day, this movement is all about reclaiming control and building healthier relationships—with others and, most importantly, with yourself.
