Severe Storms in Central NC: Power Outages Possible

Residents across central North Carolina should prepare for potentially severe weather today, with the risk of isolated tornadoes and hail. A cold front moving through the region will bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for intense thunderstorms, some of which could reach severe levels this afternoon.
Tornado Watch & Severe Thunderstorm Warnings
A tornado watch is in effect for all counties in the Triangle, including Orange, Durham, Wake, Johnston, and Cumberland.
Timing & Expected Impacts
The window for severe weather in central North Carolina is expected between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. In Raleigh, more than 100 residents lost power along Method Road near NC State’s campus.
- Primary Threat: Damaging wind gusts
- Secondary Threats: Isolated tornadoes & hail
- Wind Gusts: 40-50 mph possible, even outside of storms
- Rainfall Totals: Up to 1.5 inches
Due to strong winds, power outages remain a possibility.
Storm Progression
- Morning: Scattered showers will begin developing shortly after sunrise.
- 10 a.m.: Intense thunderstorms arrive west of the Triangle.
- 11 a.m.: Storms reach the Triangle region.
- 1 p.m.: The system moves east of the Triangle.
- 3 p.m.: Storms clear east of I-95.
Temperatures will reach the 60s this afternoon before dropping into the 40s overnight.
