First, they said perms were bad. Now, it’s braiding hair?! A recent Consumer Reports investigation has linked synthetic braiding hair to health risks. The testing of ten popular braiding hair brands found cancer-causing chemicals in 100% of the samples.

The report found benzene, a chemical linked to cancer, in three of the samples and lead in 90% of them. Additionally, when we dip the hair in hot water, it releases chemicals that can irritate our eyes, throat, and lungs. Have you ever had your scalp itching like crazy after getting braids? That might not be normal—it could be the chemicals.

Out of all the companies Consumer Reports reached out to, only two responded—Sensationnel and Magic Fingers—and both said they stand by the safety of their products. Sensationnel even told people to “confidently use” their hair. But if the test results say different, who do we believe?

Here’s how to lower your risk if you plan to continue wearing braids:

  • Pre-wash your braiding hair with apple cider vinegar or clarifying shampoo before installing.
  • Braid in a well-ventilated space to avoid breathing in those chemicals.
  • Try chemical-free alternatives like human hair or plant-based synthetics.
  • Take breaks between installs to give your scalp a rest.

Does this make you rethink getting braids, or are you sticking with them?
