In the world of DJing, standing out requires more than just skill—it takes charisma, passion, and an undeniable presence. Grammy award-winning DJ Miss Milan embodies all these qualities and more. In a recent conversation, she shared insights on her journey, inspirations, and the artistry she brings to the decks.

Miss Milan’s love for music started with a dream of becoming a performer. “I had dreams and aspirations of being the next Beyoncé, of course,” she said with a laugh. “But as life happened and responsibilities kicked in, I had to figure out what I really wanted my life to look like.”

Music, however, never left her side. “It was always like a little nagging gnat—it never truly went away,” she explained. Realizing the limited representation of women in DJing, she decided to carve her own lane. “You had Coco Chanel on the radio, and, of course, the legendary Spinderella, but I never really saw someone who looked like me and wanted to provide the type of style I wanted.” With that, she took a leap of faith and set out to create a lane where she could both DJ and perform, branding herself as “the Beyoncé of DJs.”

A Sound Shaped by Heritage and Culture

Growing up as the daughter of immigrant parents from the West Indies, Miss Milan was immersed in a rich blend of musical influences. “I grew up listening to everything—classical, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, dancehall, soca. All of that shaped my sound,” she said. Her style is a seamless fusion of genres, making her sets both diverse and uniquely her own.

“I consider myself an open-format DJ, but R&B is my number one go-to. If you book me for an R&B party, that’s probably the happiest you’ll ever see me,” she shared. Beyond personal preferences, her upbringing gave her an instinct for curating eclectic sets that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Fashion as a Brand Identity

Beyond music, Miss Milan’s style is a crucial part of her brand. “I wanted a signature look to separate myself,” she explained. That signature became her striking red hair. “Now, whether people know my name or not, they’ll say, ‘Oh, the DJ with the red hair!’”

Her fashion influence stems from her grandmother and mother, both of whom had an eye for style. “We knew how to work with very little. For me, it’s not about major brands—it’s about feeling good in what I wear.” Whether rocking designer pieces, thrifted finds, or outfits from Jamaica Avenue’s local shops, she brings confidence to everything she wears. “If I feel good and look good, I play even better.”

Doechii’s DJ

As Doechii’s official DJ, Miss Milan understands the importance of complementing an artist’s energy. “Doechii and I are the same, just in different fields. She’s the artist, I’m the DJ, but we feed off each other,” she said.

Her goal of working with artists came to fruition early on in her career, previously DJing for Justine Skye and Saweetie. But when she discovered Doechii’s music before her major signing, she knew they were destined to collaborate. “I saw something in her—I saw myself in her. Now, when we hit the stage, it’s like a supernova. We fuel each other’s energy.”

Beyond just playing music, Miss Milan sees DJs as cultural curators. “I’m knee-deep in the culture—I’m in these streets,” she said. Her ear for fresh talent has led her to discover and support up-and-coming artists before they break into the mainstream.

“For me, it’s not just about following trends; it’s about creating them. DJs used to be the ones breaking records, and I want to keep that integrity alive.” Through playlist series and artist promotion, she continues to uplift emerging talents and introduce new sounds to her audience.

Not to mention, she created EMPWR BEATS, which is all about empowering women and LGBTQ+ DJs through mentorship, music, and community. This program creates a safe, inclusive space where DJs can hone their craft while also learning about the business, mental health, and wellness aspects of the industry. By fostering connection and support, EMPWR BEATS ensures that women DJs are not just heard—but truly seen and uplifted.

DJ Miss Milan’s journey is one of self-belief, innovation, and fearless creativity. With a signature style, an electrifying stage presence, and a deep commitment to the culture, she’s not just spinning records—she’s shaping the future of music.
